Biomaking

Engaging in biomaking allows learners to reflect on the interactions between humans, bacteria and fungi. Education Makers are curious about creating everyday objects that include making with bio-materials. They have been working in collaboration with the Speculative Life Bio Lab at the Milieux Institute for Arts Culture and Technology to learn how to create mycelium lampshades. Mycelium lampshades are organic, compostable, naturally fire-retardant and buoyant (low density).

For example, Education Makers have conducted a workshop at Maison des Jeunes to co-create mycelium lampshades for the youth makerspace. The workshop was a real-life authentic learning experience at the intersection of sculpture, bio-safety and biology. Visitors who walk into the Maison des Jeunes makerspace can’t help but notice the original homegrown lampshades that light up the workbench.
